Assyrian Exodus

Collecting, documenting and sharing the many stories Assyrians have to tell about their departure from the homeland

Because every one of them deserves to be heard…

Our Mission

Only a small percentage of Assyrians remain in the ancestral homeland, the majority of the population is now dispersed in the global diaspora due to various circumstances, including various human rights violations that have not been documented.

We aim to raise awareness on this issue by collecting, documenting and sharing the exodus stories which the persecuted indigenous Assyrian people have to tell about their departure from the homeland; because every story deserves to be heard.

Project Focus

The Assyrians (also known as Chaldeans, Syriacs and Arameans) are the descendants of the ancient Assyrian civilization, the indigenous people of Mesopotamia. The present-day countries that form the Assyrian homeland consist of southeast Turkey, northern Iraq, northwest Iran and northeast Syria.

The worldwide Assyrian population is an estimated three million with the majority scattered across the global diaspora. The total combined population in Turkey, Iran and Syria are now less than sixty thousand.  Iraq holds the largest remaining concentration, comprising of approximately two hundred and fifty thousand total.  The homeland totals are decreasing rapidly on an annual basis as a result of constant departure.

While migration for most Assyrians was due to safety, security and the need to acquire basic human rights, the long-term impacts of settling in the diaspora will result in cultural assimilation within hosting countries, posing a major threat to sustaining an identity of a rapidly dwindling ethnic population.

The Assyrian Exodus Project was established to collect and document the migration stories of Assyrians who fled their homeland at a given time in their life due to a variety of factors including war, conflict, persecution, violence, and human rights violations.

Through this effort, we hope to utilize the compiled documentation as a resource to raise awareness concerning the need to protect and preserve not only the stories, but also the people of a persecuted indigenous population that is on the verge of extinction.
